Magnitude 3.4 Aftershock Strikes Waters North of Bogo City
A magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred in waters 25 kilometers north of Bogo City, Cebu at 7:19 AM on March 15, 2026, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) reported.
The shallow earthquake struck at a depth of 8 kilometers and was located at coordinates 11.14°N, 124.18°E in the Bohol Sea area north of Cebu’s northern tip.
Aftershock Activity Continues
PHIVOLCS identified this morning’s earthquake as an aftershock of the magnitude 6.9 offshore Northern Cebu earthquake that struck on September 30, 2025. The major earthquake last year caused significant damage across the Visayas region.
The tectonic origin earthquake represents continuing seismic activity in the area more than five months after the original major event.
No Damage or Additional Aftershocks Expected
PHIVOLCS assessed that no damage is expected from the magnitude 3.4 earthquake. The agency also reported that no additional aftershocks are anticipated from this morning’s seismic event.
The earthquake bulletin, issued at 7:28 AM, stated this would be the only bulletin released unless additional information becomes available.
Regional Impact Assessment
While the earthquake occurred in Cebu waters, the ongoing aftershock sequence from last year’s magnitude 6.9 event affects the broader Visayas region. Negros Oriental residents should remain informed about seismic activity given the province’s location in the central Philippines seismic zone.
The shallow depth of 8 kilometers means the earthquake’s energy was released relatively close to the surface, though the moderate magnitude limited its impact radius.
Monitoring Continues
PHIVOLCS continues monitoring seismic activity across the Philippines through its network of seismographic stations. The agency provides real-time earthquake information and assessments to help communities prepare for and respond to seismic events.
An epicentral map showing the earthquake’s location has been made available by PHIVOLCS as part of their standard earthquake documentation.
Residents across the Visayas are advised to monitor official PHIVOLCS updates at phivolcs.dost.gov.ph for the latest seismic activity information and safety guidance.
